2011 NBA Finals: Game 3 Recap/Game 4 Outlook, Mavs vs. Heat
For the Dallas Mavericks, game 3 of the 2011 NBA Finals is certainly a tough one to take. Expectations from Dallas were assuredly high for a victory in game 3 considering how game 2 was won in comeback fashion and considering home court advantage for the first of a three game set in Dallas. This game 3-outlasting by the Miami Heat will most surely sting. Game 4 now becomes that much more important as Miami can either take a convincing lead in the series by going up three games to one, or Dallas ties it up at two games-a-piece and then we have a series back on our hands. Either way you go, game 4 will now be huge.
The Dallas Mavericks just turned the ball over too much in this one. Every time down the court they were dribbling balls off their knees, throwing passes away, losing their handle and getting plucked by nosey hands. It seemed like the entire Dallas Maverick roster all decided to apply oil and grease to their hands before they started playing. Dallas looked like they were simply giving the ball away to the Heat with no care for the finals at all. The turnovers from the Mavericks got excessive and even became hard for me to stay and watch. Miami is playing cleaner, smoother, more sure basketball than Dallas is playing. I say surer, because when the Heat throw passes to themselves they actually catch the pass with sure hands instead of letting it bounce off their legs or through their hands and into the stands.
The mavericks are shooting themselves in the foot with all these turnovers and mental miscues. Does the Miami defense really have them that shook? That’s certainly what it looks like. All of a sudden, Barea and Stojakovic can’t knock down an open three point attempt? All of a sudden, Dallas becomes a turnover machine that can only score when Dirk is in the game?
Miami is playing too well in the finals and there is no room for error on the side of Dallas. Dwayne Wade had 29 points and 11 rebounds in game 3. Once again he was the Mavs’ killer. LeBron James added 17 points and 9 assists and had his usual, typical exciting dunks—silencing the crowd. Nowitzki’s 34 points and 11 rebounds all went to waste as game 3 came up “unsuccessful.” Terry tried with 15 points, but Dallas just couldn’t get enough mojo going to take a good lead and sustain it throughout the game.
This is the weak version of the Dallas Mavericks. This is not the Dallas Mavericks that got them through the playoffs and into the finals. If Dallas is going to have any shot at winning this finals series against a super strong team in the Miami Heat, the miscues, mistakes, turnovers and missing of the open-look jumpers are going to have to stop. Miami will look to push the tempo in game 4. Their feet should now be on the pedal with Dallas facing more pressure to win. If the Heat can continue to play fantastic defense, rebound well and make their free throws, than this thing could get ugly.
It was a game of runs and the Mavericks just got out-lasted. Regardless of how poorly Dallas played at times, they still only lost by a miss or make jumper from Dirk Nowitzki. The final shot of the game from Dirk Nowitzki could have just as easily gone in and Dallas would have taken the game into overtime, leaving Miami stunned out of their shoes, but instead, it is the other way around. This has already proven to be a tough series and either winner here will have deserved it, no questions asked! Game 4 will be in Dallas on Tuesday evening, starting at 9pm ET.
